Designed for both lambing and hay storage this barn in Plantagenet, Ontario is a highly rational and functional structure using an unusual light frame wood truss to efficiently span the forty five foot wide central bay.
Cantilevered, prefabricated trusses at 4 foot centres span the width of the barn in three bays, sheltering a high central hayloft and low flanking sheep pens. 6x6 wood posts along the central bay each carry a single truss, avoiding the need for a spanning member at the primary bearing points. Columns along the exterior walls are placed at 8 foot centres, the maximum span for the site-sawn 2" boards supporting the exterior sheathing. Because the primary load at the tail of the trusses is upwards (a result of the extreme cantilever), two 2x8s are sufficient to carry the trusses between posts. The barn is sheathed with prefinished metal siding and galvanized metal roofing.
