| Meeting contemporary
needs within traditional forms was the challenge of this infill
project in Ottawa South. The design began with the owners' desire
for a house with a traditional feel, and a large, welcoming entrance.
The front of the house picks up the local pattern of full width
porches, and echoes the rhythm and proportion of other buildings
on the street. The length of the house at the shared drive is broken
by the side entrance and shallow, shingled bay window above which
hints at the stairs within.
The interior of the house is arranged to provide
efficient circulation, good light and informal, open spaces. A side
entrance and cross stairs create a natural activity node and bring
light into the centre of the house. The combined living, dining
and kitchen areas, are expansive and open, with high ceilings and
bright natural light. Custom trim and millwork contribute to the
traditional feel of the interior while serving today's needs.
